There’s a lot of cleaning work to do whenever you’re undertaking a renovation job, whether you’re inside the house or out in the garden. When it comes to the latter, the amount of waste and disgusting debris you can uncover is ridiculous!
And that’s what makes unpacking a shed, whether you want to take it down or convert it into an outdoor room, such a hard task.
Years of waste can pour forth from your shed doors, and when it lands in the yard in front of you, it can be difficult to work out what to do with it all.
But that’s what we’re here to help with. Here’s what you can do with anything you’re thinking of throwing away during a shed clearout.

See What You Can Compost
Is there anything in your shed that could do with being composted? Old plant cuttings maybe? Or some bags of soil you completely forgot about? Anything organic that’s gone to waste inside the shed can be put in the compost heap and turned into something usable in a few months’ time.
This will save you the cost of the original investments you made, but if you’re trying to re landscape your garden or incorporate a kitchen garden area, it ensures you have a lot more fertilizer and mulch to work with too.
Plus, once those massive ‘grow’ bags are out of the way, you’ll find there’ll be a lot more room inside the shed for potting work too!
Fix Up Broken Tools
It’s cheaper than buying new ones! And the bigger, more complex the tool seems – like a lawn mower or pressure washer – ironically, the easier it’ll be to find a fix for it.Â
Indeed, you can easily head online right now to find the right parts to fix your pressure washer and you’ll be none worse off. Instead, you can buy what you need, find a tutorial that’ll show you what to do, and fix the thing!
That’ll save on trying to pack it into the back of your car as well, which we all know can be the most frustrating thing in the world!
Donate or Upcycle
Anything that comes out of the shed that isn’t organic, and isn’t a tool that either needs fixing or throwing away, can be donated or even upcycled.
Old garden furniture, if given a bit of a clean up, can easily be taken to a thrift store or sold in a yard sale. Or if you’d like to keep it and use it again, make some new cushions for it, repaint the wood or plastic, and set them out on the patio again.
Remember, anything that’s overwhelmingly wooden may need a new coat of sealing varnish for waterproofing too!
If a shed clear out is in your future, use the ideas above to help you deal with the waste. There’s usually a lot when you’re clearing outside storage, and not all of it should just be thrown out!
